THE RECORD BREAKERS OF THE LANCASHIRE ELECTRIC POWER COMPANY LIMITED
Researched and written by Graham Edge
Published March 2006
This 88 pages large format book covers the history of The Lancashire Electric Power Company Limited from its founding in 1900 until it was nationalised in 1948. By then the L.E.P. Co. operated three electrical power generation stations, all of which continued producing electricity in subsequent years under the auspices of the Central Electricity Generating Board. In the near fifty years of its existence the L.E.P. Co. became recognised as the most efficient electricity generator in Great Britain and all three of its power stations achieved notable results. Kearsley Power Station was the biggest of the three and in its heyday was one of the largest coal fired power stations in Europe. It also achieved many records and ‘firsts’, becoming recognised world wide as a showpiece. It was a forerunner of today’s massive, super, power stations.
This lavishly illustrated study covers each of the L.E.P. Co.’s power stations; Radcliffe (1905 – 1959), Padiham ‘A’ (1927 – 1969) and Kearsley (1929 – 1981). It also has a comprehensive description of the internal railway system at Kearsley and its four locomotives.
